12 Key Differences Between Royal Frenchel Frenchies and Standard French Bulldogs
The Royal Frenchel Frenchie may look similar to a French Bulldog at first glance—with that iconic, irresistible face and compact body—but that’s where the similarities stop. When it comes to health, personality, and overall ease of living, Royal Frenchels are in a league of their own. They’re award-winning for both longevity and health, bred intentionally for modern lifestyles, and adored by families around the world. If you’re considering a Frenchie-type pup, here’s why a Royal Frenchel may be the better, wiser choice.
Rarity
Royal Frenchels are a truly one-of-a-kind breed, lovingly developed by Anahata Graceland over the past 25 years. From their beginnings in Seattle to cherished homes across France, Italy, Canada, England, and beyond, Royal Frenchels have become part of a global family devoted to their extraordinary qualities. Unlike imitators who attempt to replicate their charm, Royal Frenchels are not just a mix—they are a carefully evolved breed. Only Royal Frenchel holds the original, perfected blend of genetics responsible for their iconic look, robust health, and joyful temperament—including the world’s smallest Frenchies. And let’s be honest—you can’t copycat 25 years of thoughtful, loving development. What sets the Royal Frenchel brand apart is its cutting-edge approach to companion dogs, uniquely designed for today’s modern lifestyles. Royal Frenchels are bred not just for appearance, but to bring out the innate personality and natural intelligence within each pup. The result? Intuitive, smart, affectionate, agile, and fun-loving dogs who thrive in travel, adapt to change, and find joy in everyday life—as long as they’re with their people. Anahata personally oversees every part of the breeding process, introducing carefully selected new bloodlines every 4 to 5 years to enhance health, deepen emotional connection, and extend longevity. Every Royal is raised with intention, creating a dog that is not only beautiful, but also genetically sound, emotionally stable, and ready to bond deeply with their new family.
Fewer Health Issues
Royal Frenchels are in a class of their own when it comes to health—boasting more than 10 times the health of standard French Bulldogs. In fact, they’ve been nationally awarded for both Longevity and Health, proudly ranking in the Top 2 Healthiest Hybrid Breeds in the U.S. (Insert gold award dog image here!) French Bulldogs, while lovable, are known for their health struggles. As a brachycephalic breed, they’re prone to a range of respiratory complications caused by their shortened snouts. This condition, called brachycephalic airway syndrome, can affect their heart, lungs, and digestive systems—often leading to painful issues like reflux, labored breathing, and even early death from complications like enlarged hearts. Royal Frenchels were purposefully bred to avoid these pitfalls. With slightly longer snouts, stronger cardiovascular systems, and more balanced anatomy, they’re dramatically less likely to experience the chronic conditions that plague French Bulldogs and similar breeds. And when we say our dogs are healthy, we back it up with full transparency. We are the only breeder in the world (that we’ve found!) who publicly lists every reported health issue on our website—nothing hidden, nothing glossed over.
Hypoallergenic
One of the most overlooked—but incredibly valuable—differences between Royal Frenchels and French Bulldogs is their effect on people with allergies. French Bulldogs are not hypoallergenic. In fact, they often trigger allergic reactions due to their dander, saliva proteins, and skin sensitivities. Many Frenchie lovers have had to manage their symptoms with medication just to live comfortably with their dogs. This was true even for Anahata, the breeder of Royal Frenchels, who for years had to take daily allergy medication while raising French Bulldogs. But once she developed the Royal Frenchel—with its low-dander, hypoallergenic coat and balanced skin health—that all changed. She no longer needs medication to be around her dogs every day. While no dog is 100% allergen-free, Royal Frenchels are significantly easier on allergy-prone individuals and families. Their smoother coats produce far less dander, and their healthier skin reduces the shedding of allergens that typically cause reactions. So if you’re looking for the love and personality of a Frenchie—without the sneezing, itching, or medication—a Royal Frenchel offers the perfect solution.
Distinct Breeding Process
The origin of the Royal Frenchel is unlike any other breed story—and that’s part of what makes them so extraordinary. Royal Frenchels were intentionally and exclusively created by Anahata Graceland, the breed’s sole founder and official breeder. With a deep commitment to excellence, Anahata blended French Bulldog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lines—along with a few carefully selected stabilizing breeds—to produce a dog with exceptional health, emotional intelligence, and trainability. Over the past 25+ years, the Royal Frenchel gene pool has been patiently and precisely developed, resulting in a breed that consistently outshines both standard French Bulldogs and Frenchie mixes in temperament, health, and adaptability. The entire lineage has been publicly documented online since 2011, offering transparency and verifiability few breeders can match. Anahata continues to refine and enhance the breed to meet the needs of today’s families—selecting for the best personalities, strongest health, and longest lives with every generation.
Maturity & Appearance
One of the most charming qualities of a Royal Frenchel is how they retain their adorable “puppy” look for life. Unlike many breeds that change significantly as they grow—developing longer muzzles, changing coat colors, or shifting in proportions—Royal Frenchels maintain their youthful appearance well into adulthood. They reach their full height and length by around 9 months, their head structure finishes by 12 months, and they slowly fill out over the next couple of years, reaching full maturity by age 3. What you see as a puppy is almost exactly what you’ll have as an adult—no surprise changes, just a consistently lovable companion.
Age Expectactions
French Bulldogs, while beloved for their personality, have an average lifespan of just 9 years—largely due to chronic health issues that affect their breathing, digestion, and cardiovascular systems. Royal Frenchels, on the other hand, are bred for health and longevity, with life expectancies ranging from 14 to 18 years. That’s nearly double the average lifespan of most French Bulldogs, and especially rare for dogs in the mini French Bulldog size range. Smaller Royal Frenchels tend to live on the longer end of the spectrum, making them a truly long-term companion for those seeking both love and longevity.
Agility and Excercise
French Bulldogs are not high-energy dogs, but they do enjoy walks and outdoor play. However, they’re highly vulnerable to overheating, especially in temperatures over 80°F. Tragically, many Frenchies have passed away from simply playing in the backyard. Royal Frenchels, on the other hand, are far more temperature-resilient and agile. **The smallest Royals—comparable in size to a mini French Bulldog—**are light, playful, and easy to manage, while larger Royals may enjoy hiking and more extended adventures. All sizes benefit from moderate daily activity and remain fit, mobile, and happy throughout their lives. Their slightly longer snouts, necks, and front legs give them better balance, airflow, and movement, reducing injury risk and allowing them to keep up with their humans—without the danger that standard French Bulldogs often face.
Personality
Royal Frenchels carry the lovable charm of a Frenchie—but with a calmer, more emotionally intelligent twist. While French Bulldogs tend to be territorial, Royal Frenchels are relational by nature. This makes them remarkably attuned to their people, more adaptable to new environments, and wonderfully easy to travel with—they don’t need to be “home” to feel at peace. Smart, affectionate, and deeply intuitive, Royals often sense your emotions before you even speak. Many make natural therapy or service dogs, simply by being themselves. Their “Manners Matter Most” personality means they’re polite, easy to train, and a joy to have in any home or situation.
Family Life
Both French Bulldogs and Royal Frenchels enjoy being part of a family—but Royal Frenchels take that love to the next level. They’re gentle, consistent, and especially adoring of children. Unlike French Bulldogs, which can be reactive or too energetic around young kids, Royals are calm, considerate, and naturally good with little ones. They’re also easy to travel with, staying grounded and relaxed no matter where you go. And perhaps most incredible of all—their intuitive nature. Royals often notice when something is “off,” whether it’s emotional or physical, and will stick by your side with quiet support. They’ve been known to comfort sick children, alert seniors to health needs, and simply be there in the most loving way possible.
Separation Anxiety
French Bulldogs are known to struggle with separation anxiety, often chewing, barking, or howling when left alone. Royal Frenchels, however, are calm and secure by nature. With consistent training and the right environment, they learn to trust your routines and stay peaceful, patient, and relaxed while you’re away. And thanks to their polite, easy-going nature, many owners simply take their Royal everywhere they go—restaurants, road trips, and more. They’re built for connection—not clinginess.

Vets Praise Royal Frenchels

Award-Winning Breed
Royal Frenchels aren’t just adored by their families—they’re recognized at a national level for excellence. They earned the #2 spot on Farmers Insurance’s list of Top Hybrid Dog Breeds, based on key traits like health, temperament, agility, and family compatibility. And here’s why that matters: insurance companies do the deepest research in the world when it comes to protecting their bottom line. The fewer claims they pay, the better—so when they recommend a breed, it’s because it performs well in real life. If they can encourage people to choose dogs with fewer health problems, everyone wins. So, for families searching for a mini French Bulldog with better health and temperament, Royal Frenchels provide a smarter, longer-lasting alternative—and the awards prove it.
Lifetime Support From Your Royal Frenchel Family
At Royal Frenchel, our relationship with you—and your dog—doesn’t end at adoption. It’s just the beginning of a lifelong bond built on trust, support, and community. With so many new, inexperienced breeders flooding the Frenchie market, flashy “guarantees” often provide no real protection. In most cases, pursuing one of those guarantees legally would cost more than the dog itself. The best protection you can have? A reputable breeder who walks the journey with you. Anahata Graceland has been breeding for over three generations of families, many of whom return again and again. Over the years, a true community of Royal Frenchel families has formed—with friendships, connections, and shared stories all built around this one extraordinary breed. Every Royal family receives Anahata’s direct phone number and lifetime support. Whether you need advice, help, or just want to share a sweet moment, we’re always here.
